Overview

Step beyond the tourist trail and discover Bangkok through the eyes of one of its most knowledgeable and creative residents—Joe Cummings, the pioneering author of the first Lonely Planet guide to Thailand. In this intimate tour, Joe reveals the city’s hidden corners, weaving together history, culture, art, and food in a way only decades of insider experience can provide. Explore lesser-known neighborhoods, back-alley shrines, and vibrant street markets. And of course, stopping for one of Joe’s favorite meals.  Along the way, Joe shares personal stories from his life in Bangkok, offering rare insights into the people and traditions that define the Thai capital. This is more than sightseeing—it’s an immersive conversation with the city itself, guided by a man who has called it home for over 40 years.

Pearl Hotel Phuket Vegetarian Festival Experience

phuket vegetarian festival extraordinary travel festival

🚨 Highlights

Agenda: A mix of the Phuket Vegetarian Festival as well as some cultural experiences
Dates: October 16-19, 2026
Cost: TBD
Benefit: Visit Phuket to witness the Phuket Vegetarian Festival, one of the most intense events in South East Asia with a guide

Overview

Visiting Phuket during the Vegetarian Festival is both mesmerizing and intense. The island transforms as locals, dressed in white, gather to honor Taoist traditions that date back nearly two centuries. The air crackles with energy—firecrackers thunder through the streets, drums pound rhythmically, and smoke fills the sky. What captures most visitors’ attention are the processions of devotees in trance-like states, believed to be possessed by the spirits of gods. Many perform astonishing acts of self-mortification: cheeks pierced with swords, spears, or even household objects, their expressions serene despite the spectacle. These rituals symbolize purification, sacrifice, and a channeling of pain for the community’s good fortune. It is both shocking and profoundly spiritual, leaving outsiders in awe of the faith behind it. Between processions, the streets are lined with food stalls serving inventive vegan dishes, offering travelers a chance to savor Thailand’s cuisine while immersing themselves in this extraordinary cultural celebration.

Stay in the heart of Phuket City at the Pearl Hotel.  This will be your homebase to explore the Festival, Phuket City, and the foodie scene with a guide who will give you the insider’s guide to all things Festival.
